Slack, launched in 2013, promised to kill email but mostly just added GIF wars to our workdays. Subscriptions run from $7.25 to $15.00 monthly per user. Available on iOS, Android, and Desktop. Cancelling could save you up to $180 per user annually. Visit Slack. Like the chaotic kitchen in The Bear, constant pings can burn you out. Trustpilot data highlights a 2.3-star rating, with users flagging "billing for inactive members" and "impossible cancellation flows" as top grievances. With recent price hikes and the Salesforce acquisition changing the vibe, many teams are logging off for good.
How to Cancel Slack on Desktop (Web)
This is the primary method for 99% of users. Unless you specifically signed up through an app store, you must use a browser to cancel. The mobile app usually hides these settings.
1 Open Your Workspace Menu
Log in to Slack on your computer. Click your Workspace Name in the top left corner. If you manage multiple workspaces, make sure you are in the right one.
2 Navigate to Billing
Hover over Settings & administration in the dropdown menu, then click on Billing. If you do not see this option, you are likely not an Admin (which means you cannot cancel).
3 Access Overview Tab
Click on the Overview tab. This page shows your current plan and payment method. Look for the section labeled Plan.
4 Change or Downgrade Plan
Click Change Plan. To fully cancel the paid subscription, select the option to Downgrade to Free. You will need to confirm this choice on the next screen to stop future charges.
How to Cancel Slack on iPhone (iOS)
Use this method only if you purchased your subscription directly through the Apple App Store. Most business accounts are not billed this way.
1 Open Settings
Tap the grey Settings gear icon on your iPhone home screen.
2 Tap Your Apple ID
Tap your Name/Apple ID banner at the very top of the Settings menu.
3 Select Subscriptions
Tap Subscriptions. Wait a second for the list to load.
4 Cancel Slack
Find Slack in the list. Tap it, then tap Cancel Subscription. If you do not see it here, you definitely signed up via the desktop site (see the section above).
How to Cancel Slack on Android
Similar to iOS, this only applies if you paid via Google Play. If you pay via credit card or invoice directly to Slack, use the Desktop guide.
1 Open Google Play Store
Launch the Play Store app on your Android device.
2 Tap Profile Icon
Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
3 Go to Payments & Subscriptions
Tap Payments & subscriptions, then select Subscriptions.
4 Cancel Subscription
Locate Slack in the list. Tap it and select Cancel subscription. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.
What is Slack Cancellation Policy
Slack does not make leaving easy. Their policy states that if you cancel, your workspace downgrades to the Free version at the end of your current billing cycle. They generally do not offer refunds for unused time. Period. This is a huge pain point for users who forget to cancel before the annual renewal hits. Also, be aware of their "Fair Billing Policy" (it sounds nice, but it is confusing). They charge based on active users, but if you cancel the whole workspace, any credits you accrued usually vanish into the ether rather than returning to your bank account.
Before You Cancel Slack: What You Should Know
Will I lose my data?
Not immediately. When you downgrade to the Free plan, your message history becomes limited (hidden, not deleted) to the last 90 days. Your files remain, but you might lose access to older ones until you pay again.
Can I pause instead?
No. Slack does not offer a "pause" button. You either pay or you downgrade to Free.
Best time to cancel?
At least 3 days before your renewal date. Their system can be slow to update, and you do not want to fight support over a charge that processed at 12:01 AM.
Having Trouble Cancelling Your Slack Subscription?
You Might Not Be an Admin
This is the most common issue. Only a Workspace Owner or Admin can manage billing. If you are just a member, you cannot cancel the subscription. You have to ask your boss.
The "Change Plan" Button is Missing
If you are on an Enterprise Grid plan, you cannot cancel online. You have to contact your Account Manager or sales rep directly. Annoying, right?
Try Incognito Mode
Sometimes the billing page glitches on Chrome. Try opening the billing settings in an Incognito/Private window to force a fresh load.
