Microsoft 365 (OneDrive)

How to Cancel Microsoft 365 (OneDrive) Subscription

So, you're ready to cancel Microsoft 365. Maybe the annual fee snuck up on you, or you're just not using Word and Excel enough to justify the cost. It happens. Microsoft 365, which started as Office 365 back in 2011, bundles classic apps with OneDrive cloud storage. It's useful, until it's not. With plans ranging from $6.99 to $99.99, you can save up to $100 a year by canceling. This guide covers canceling on desktop, iOS, and Android. After all, not everyone needs 1 TB of storage just to argue with their colleagues about whether Teams is better than Slack.

How to Cancel Microsoft 365 (OneDrive) Subscription on Desktop

This is the most common way to cancel. You do it directly through your Microsoft account on a web browser. It works best on a computer, not so much on a mobile browser.

1 Go to Your Microsoft Account

Head over to the Microsoft account services page: account.microsoft.com/services. Make sure you're logged into the right account. It's a common mistake.

2 Find Your Subscription

Find your Microsoft 365 subscription in the list. It should show the name of your plan, like 'Microsoft 365 Family' or 'Personal'.

3 Click 'Manage'

Next to your subscription details, click Manage. This is where all the important settings are hidden.

4 Turn Off Recurring Billing

Here's where it gets a little tricky. Microsoft might show you an option to Cancel subscription or Turn off recurring billing. They mean the same thing: your plan won't renew. Choose whichever one you see. They'll probably try to convince you to stay. Just push through.

5 Confirm the Cancellation

Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the cancellation. You should receive an email confirming that your subscription will not renew. I had to refresh the page once because the final confirmation button didn't load properly, so be aware of that.

How to Cancel Microsoft 365 (OneDrive) Subscription on iOS

If you signed up through the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, you have to cancel it there. Microsoft can't cancel it for you. It's an Apple thing.

1 Open Settings

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2 Tap Your Apple ID

Tap on your name and Apple ID at the very top of the screen.

3 Go to Subscriptions

Select the Subscriptions option from the list.

4 Find the Subscription

Find and tap on your Microsoft 365 subscription.

5 Tap 'Cancel Subscription'

Tap the Cancel Subscription button. It's usually at the bottom in red. Confirm your choice, and you're all set. Apple will handle the rest.

How to Cancel Microsoft 365 (OneDrive) Subscription on Android

Similar to iOS, if you subscribed through the Google Play Store, you must cancel it there. Your subscription is tied to your Google account.

1 Open the Play Store

Launch the Google Play Store app on your Android device.

2 Tap Your Profile Icon

Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner.

3 Select 'Payments & subscriptions'

In the menu, tap on Payments & subscriptions.

4 Tap 'Subscriptions'

Choose Subscriptions to see all your active plans.

5 Find Microsoft 365

Find your Microsoft 365 subscription in the list and tap on it.

6 Cancel the Subscription

Tap Cancel subscription at the bottom and follow the prompts. Google will ask why you're leaving, but you can skip it.

Cancel Microsoft 365 (OneDrive) Subscription with live chat

Microsoft really prefers you use their online help tools, but you can try their support chat. Go to the Microsoft Support page, type 'cancel subscription' into the help box, and navigate the prompts until you see an option to 'Contact Support'. You'll likely have to sign in again. Be prepared for a wait.

Cancel Microsoft 365 (OneDrive) Subscription with phone

You can call Microsoft Support at 1-800-642-7676, but getting a human for a billing issue can be a real test of patience. They have an automated system that will try its best to solve your problem without a person. Hours are typically standard business hours, but wait times can be long.

Before you cancel, know this. Your data in OneDrive won't be deleted immediately. It goes into a 'read-only' mode for a while (usually 30 days) before Microsoft deletes it for good, so download anything important. As for refunds, you might get one if you cancel an annual plan within 30 days of the charge. For monthly plans, forget it. You just use it until the month ends. There's no option to pause your subscription.
