Google One

How to Cancel Google One Subscription

Google One, launched in 2018, is what happened after Google Drive storage got a rebrand and some extra perks. It’s not just cloud storage; it’s a bundle with a VPN, extra Google Photos editing tools, and sometimes member rewards. Remember that collective groan when Google killed free unlimited photo backups? Yeah, that's what pushed many of us onto a Google One plan. Subscription prices range from $1.99 to $9.99 a month, and this guide covers how to cancel on desktop, iOS, and Android. If you're tired of paying for storage you don't use, cancelling could save you up to $120 a year. Let's get that money back in your pocket.

How to Cancel Google One Subscription on Desktop

This is the most direct way to cancel. It avoids any app store nonsense. I've found this works best, as sometimes the apps can be a bit buggy with subscription management.

1 Go to the Google One Website

Open your browser and head to one.google.com. Make sure you're logged into the correct Google account. Seriously, check the profile picture in the corner if you have multiple accounts.

2 Find Your Settings

On the left-hand menu, click on Settings. If you don't see it, look for a gear icon. It can sometimes be hiding.

3 Locate the Cancel Option

Under the 'Your membership plan' section, you should see an option that says Cancel membership. It's usually a plain text link, not a big flashy button.

4 Confirm the Cancellation

Google will probably show you a screen asking if you're really sure you want to leave. Just confirm your choice. You should receive a confirmation email shortly after, though mine took almost 20 minutes to show up once.

How to Cancel Google One Subscription on Android

If you signed up on your Android phone, your subscription is likely managed through the Google Play Store. It's pretty straightforward, but you're dealing with the Play Store's interface, not Google One's directly.

1 Open the Google One App

Find and open the Google One app on your Android device.

2 Navigate to Your Plan

Tap your profile picture in the top right, then select Membership plan. This should show your current subscription details.

3 Start the Cancellation

Tap on Manage subscription. This will kick you over to the Google Play Store's subscription management page. A bit annoying that it can't just be done in the app, right?

4 Cancel in the Play Store

Find your Google One subscription in the list and tap on it. At the bottom, you'll see the Cancel subscription button. Tap it and follow the final prompts.

How to Cancel Google One Subscription on iOS

Cancelling on an iPhone is a classic 'it depends' situation. If you subscribed through Apple's App Store, you have to cancel it there. If you subscribed on the web, you have to go back to the web. This guide is for App Store subscriptions.

1 Open Your iPhone Settings

This isn't done in the Google One app. Go to the main Settings app on your device (the gray gear icon).

2 Go to Apple ID Subscriptions

Tap your name at the very top of the Settings screen. Then, tap on Subscriptions.

3 Find the Google One Subscription

You'll see a list of all your active and expired subscriptions. Find Google One in the list and tap on it.

4 Cancel the Subscription

Tap the red Cancel Subscription button at the bottom. You'll have to confirm it, and then you're done. The subscription will now show an 'Expires on' date.

Before you hit cancel, know this: Google won't delete your files right away. Phew. But you will be downgraded to the free 15 GB of storage. If you're using more than that, you won't be able to save new files to Drive, receive emails in Gmail, or back up photos. It's a real problem. Also, don't expect a refund for the current billing period. Once you pay, that money is gone, you just get to use the service until the cycle ends. And no, you can't pause your membership. It's all or nothing.
