Cancel on Desktop or Mobile Web
Ars subscriptions are account based, so the desktop and mobile web routes use the same account page.
- Open
https://arstechnica.com/.
- Open
https://arstechnica.com/civis/account/subscription/.
- Select Manage Subscription.
- Choose the cancellation or auto-renewal control.
- Complete the confirmation prompts.
- Save the expiration date and confirmation.
If the subscription page does not show the paid plan, check whether you are signed in to a second Ars account. If you paid with PayPal, also confirm the PayPal automatic payment status.
What Canceling Changes
Ars describes cancellation as stopping auto re-billing. The paid features continue through the current paid period.
| Topic |
Current Ars guidance |
| Auto-renewal |
All plans re-bill automatically by default |
| Cancellation effect |
Stops future re-billing |
| Current paid period |
Subscription features stay active until the paid period ends |
| Credit card storage |
Stripe keeps card details while auto-renewal is active |
| Payment handling |
Chargebee manages subscriptions; Stripe or PayPal processes payment |
| Refunds |
Ars says it does not offer refunds under most circumstances |
| Account deletion |
Benefits may end if you ask Ars to delete the account |
If you only want to remove stored payment details, Ars says to cancel from the account subscription page. Canceling removes auto re-billing while the paid features continue through the current paid period.
Current Ars Subscription Prices
Ars currently lists:
| Plan |
Price |
Main billing note |
| Ars Pro monthly |
$5/month |
Automatically re-billed unless canceled |
| Ars Pro annual |
$25/year |
Annual option for Ars Pro |
| Ars Pro++ annual |
$50/year |
Annual option with Pro++ badge and support level |
Subscription benefits can change over time. Ars says subscriber features are provided as-is and may change or be removed.
PayPal, Stripe, and Chargebee
Ars says the subscription service is Chargebee and payments are processed through Stripe or PayPal. Ars also says its servers do not receive or store card numbers. Stripe or PayPal keeps the payment details needed for future billing while automatic renewal is active.
Use this checklist:
| Payment method |
Extra step |
| Credit card through Stripe |
Confirm auto-renewal is off in the Ars subscription page |
| PayPal |
Confirm the automatic payment is stopped in both Ars and PayPal |
| New card required |
Update payment only if you plan to keep the subscription |
| Unknown charge |
Compare the charge date with the Ars renewal date and receipt |
If the account page says the subscription is canceled but PayPal still shows an active automatic payment, contact Ars support and review the PayPal settings before the next renewal.
Gift Subscriptions
Ars says gift subscriptions can be purchased from the subscription page. Gift credits are currently for new subscriptions; if a recipient is already a subscriber, Ars asks users to contact support about applying credit to the existing subscription.
For a gift issue, save:
- buyer email
- recipient email
- gift message or receipt
- gift tier
- date purchased
- any support response
The normal cancellation flow may not be enough if the problem is gift credit application rather than your own recurring subscription.
Use the Ars contact form or support@arstechnica.com if the subscription page does not show the right plan, the Manage Subscription button fails, paid features still do not work after payment, a gift credit needs help, or a renewal appears after cancellation.
When contacting support, include:
