How to Cancel Ars Technica

Cancel Ars Technica Pro or Pro++ by managing the Ars subscription page, stopping auto-renewal through Chargebee, Stripe, or PayPal, and saving proof of expiration, support requests, and refund status.

Ars Technica subscriptions are managed from the Ars account subscription page. Ars says subscriptions use Chargebee, with payment processed through Stripe or PayPal, and all plans are automatically re-billed by default. Canceling stops future auto-renewal, but subscriber features continue through the already paid period.

Ars currently lists three paid tiers: Ars Pro at $5/month, Ars Pro at $25/year, and Ars Pro++ at $50/year. You do not need a subscription to read public Ars Technica content, but a subscription can remove ads and trackers, add reader features, provide full-text RSS feeds, unlock subscriber forums, and provide PDF downloads.

Best Cancellation Route

Subscription situation Where to cancel What to save
Ars Pro or Pro++ billed through Ars Ars account subscription page Expiration date and auto-renewal status
Credit card billing Ars subscription page through Chargebee and Stripe Last four digits, date, and confirmation
PayPal billing Ars subscription page and PayPal account PayPal subscription status and Ars confirmation
Gift subscription Ars support if the gift needs help Gift email and recipient email
Subscription benefits not working Ars contact form or support@arstechnica.com Support request and account email
Account deletion request Ars support Deletion request confirmation

The direct subscription page is https://arstechnica.com/civis/account/subscription/. Sign in first, then use the Manage Subscription button.

Step-by-Step: How to Cancel Ars Technica

1 Sign in to Ars Technica

Go to https://arstechnica.com/ and sign in with the Ars account that owns the subscription.

2 Open the subscription page

Go to https://arstechnica.com/civis/account/subscription/ or use the account menu to reach the subscription page.

3 Choose Manage Subscription

Click Manage Subscription. Ars says this is where subscribers can update payment preferences or cancel re-billing.

4 Turn off auto-renewal

Cancel the subscription or stop auto re-billing in the Chargebee-managed flow. Complete every confirmation step.

5 Check the expiration date

Confirm the subscription remains active through the paid period and that the next automatic billing date has been removed.

6 Save proof

Save the confirmation screen, expiration date, PayPal subscription status if applicable, and any support email.

Cancel on Desktop or Mobile Web

Ars subscriptions are account based, so the desktop and mobile web routes use the same account page.

  1. Open https://arstechnica.com/.
  2. Sign in.
  3. Open https://arstechnica.com/civis/account/subscription/.
  4. Select Manage Subscription.
  5. Choose the cancellation or auto-renewal control.
  6. Complete the confirmation prompts.
  7. Save the expiration date and confirmation.

If the subscription page does not show the paid plan, check whether you are signed in to a second Ars account. If you paid with PayPal, also confirm the PayPal automatic payment status.

What Canceling Changes

Ars describes cancellation as stopping auto re-billing. The paid features continue through the current paid period.

Topic Current Ars guidance
Auto-renewal All plans re-bill automatically by default
Cancellation effect Stops future re-billing
Current paid period Subscription features stay active until the paid period ends
Credit card storage Stripe keeps card details while auto-renewal is active
Payment handling Chargebee manages subscriptions; Stripe or PayPal processes payment
Refunds Ars says it does not offer refunds under most circumstances
Account deletion Benefits may end if you ask Ars to delete the account

If you only want to remove stored payment details, Ars says to cancel from the account subscription page. Canceling removes auto re-billing while the paid features continue through the current paid period.

Current Ars Subscription Prices

Ars currently lists:

Plan Price Main billing note
Ars Pro monthly $5/month Automatically re-billed unless canceled
Ars Pro annual $25/year Annual option for Ars Pro
Ars Pro++ annual $50/year Annual option with Pro++ badge and support level

Subscription benefits can change over time. Ars says subscriber features are provided as-is and may change or be removed.

PayPal, Stripe, and Chargebee

Ars says the subscription service is Chargebee and payments are processed through Stripe or PayPal. Ars also says its servers do not receive or store card numbers. Stripe or PayPal keeps the payment details needed for future billing while automatic renewal is active.

Use this checklist:

Payment method Extra step
Credit card through Stripe Confirm auto-renewal is off in the Ars subscription page
PayPal Confirm the automatic payment is stopped in both Ars and PayPal
New card required Update payment only if you plan to keep the subscription
Unknown charge Compare the charge date with the Ars renewal date and receipt

If the account page says the subscription is canceled but PayPal still shows an active automatic payment, contact Ars support and review the PayPal settings before the next renewal.

Gift Subscriptions

Ars says gift subscriptions can be purchased from the subscription page. Gift credits are currently for new subscriptions; if a recipient is already a subscriber, Ars asks users to contact support about applying credit to the existing subscription.

For a gift issue, save:

  • buyer email
  • recipient email
  • gift message or receipt
  • gift tier
  • date purchased
  • any support response

The normal cancellation flow may not be enough if the problem is gift credit application rather than your own recurring subscription.

When to Contact Ars Support

Use the Ars contact form or support@arstechnica.com if the subscription page does not show the right plan, the Manage Subscription button fails, paid features still do not work after payment, a gift credit needs help, or a renewal appears after cancellation.

When contacting support, include:

Detail Why it helps
Ars username Locates the account
Subscription email Confirms login identity
Plan name Ars Pro monthly, Ars Pro annual, or Ars Pro++
Payment method Stripe card or PayPal
Last charge date and amount Matches Chargebee records
Screenshot of subscription page Shows active, canceled, or expiration status
PayPal subscription status Helpful if PayPal still shows automatic payment

Ars says users should select Technical/Subscription Support from the contact form dropdown for subscription issues.

What to Save

Proof Why it matters
Subscription page screenshot Shows active plan and expiration date
Manage Subscription confirmation Shows auto-renewal was stopped
PayPal cancellation screen Confirms PayPal automatic payment is stopped
Receipt or charge email Shows plan, amount, and payment date
Support email or ticket response Tracks issues that need manual help
Expiration date Shows when benefits should end
Account email and username Helps support locate the subscription
