Albert says fee payments automatically renew until deactivated. It also says customers can deactivate or close the account in the app by going to Profile > Menu > Payments > Help Center > Deactivate or close my accounts, or by using Albert's web deactivation page.
Albert's Genius refund article says Albert does not offer refunds for monthly Albert subscriptions. It also says pausing Smart money does not pause Albert subscription payments. For that reason, a strong billing complaint should ask for:
- confirmation of the plan charged
- cancellation or deactivation status
- billing date and amount
- written refund decision
- confirmation that future subscription payments have stopped
Deactivation and permanent closure are not identical. Albert says deactivating the account cancels the Albert subscription, keeps login details active, and allows reactivation later. Permanent closure closes all Albert accounts. Albert also says accounts included with the subscription must be zeroed out before deactivation or closure, including Savings and Investing balances, and that deactivation does not remove advance or loan balances owed. If autopay is on for balances owed, Albert says automatic payments may continue.
Albert Cash, Card Errors, and Unauthorized Transactions
Albert's Cash Account Agreement says the Albert Cash demand deposit account is provided by Sutton Bank and serviced by Albert, and that funds are held in a pooled account eligible for FDIC insurance up to $250,000 on a pass-through basis. For customer service, the agreement lists text 639-37, phone 844-891-9309, and email support@albert.com.
For card transaction issues, Albert's Help Center says contacting the merchant is often the fastest first step when the merchant can cancel or reverse the transaction. It also explains that pending holds can take time:
- restaurants, hotels, and gas stations may place temporary holds
- gas stations can hold up to $125 at the pump
- gas holds usually release within 2 hours, but can take up to 4 days
- non-travel, non-hospitality pending transactions can stay pending up to 8 days
- travel and hospitality cancellations can take up to 30 days
For actual card or electronic transaction errors, use the account agreement process. Albert's Cash Account Agreement says error reports can be made by text, phone, or email, and that users must be allowed to report an error until 60 days after the earlier of electronic access to the account history showing the error or the date the first written history showing the error was sent. It says users need to provide the name, account/card account number if applicable, error description, and suspected dollar amount.
The agreement says Albert may require an oral complaint to be put in writing within 10 business days. It says a determination is generally made within 10 business days, with possible extended investigation up to 45 days, and up to 90 days for certain new-card, POS, or foreign-initiated transactions. If more time is needed, the account is generally credited within 10 business days for the amount believed in error while the investigation continues; new accounts may take up to 20 business days.
Instant Advances, Loans, and Repayment Complaints
Albert's Help Center describes Albert Instant as an unsecured line of credit with limits from $25 to $1,000. It says draw fees may apply each time a user advances, but only on the amount borrowed, and that a subscription with Albert is not required to take out an Instant advance or Albert Loan.
For Instant repayment complaints, collect:
- advance amount
- draw fee
- due date
- autopay status
- manual payment receipt
- linked account used for repayment
- any late fee or suspension notice
- support messages
Albert's Instant repayment article says users can repay by turning on autopay or making a manual payment, can view upcoming payments from Borrow > Albert Instant > Settings > Balance outstanding, and can pause autopay in the app or by contacting support. It also says late fees may apply if the balance is not repaid by the agreed date, and that access to future advances can be suspended depending on how late repayment is completed.
Do not treat an Instant or loan balance as canceled just because the subscription is deactivated. Albert's account-closure article says deactivation does not remove advance or loan balances owed.
When to Escalate Beyond Albert
| Situation |
Escalation path |
Notes |
| Subscription billed after deactivation |
Albert support, then payment issuer or CFPB if unresolved |
Include deactivation record, charge date, plan, and refund decision |
| Genius refund denied |
Albert support first |
Albert says monthly subscription refunds are not offered; ask for written decision |
| Unauthorized Albert Card transaction |
Albert/Sutton support immediately |
Include statement, receipt, merchant, amount, and timing |
| Cash account error not resolved |
Albert support, then CFPB or relevant bank/regulatory path |
Keep 60-day error-reporting timing and support record |
| Instant or loan repayment issue |
Albert support first |
Include due date, autopay status, payment receipt, and fee/suspension notice |
| Identity verification/account lock |
Albert support |
Provide requested verification through official app/support paths only |
| Consumer financial product complaint |
CFPB complaint |
CFPB is appropriate for covered financial product or service issues after direct support has not resolved the problem |
| Card billing error with external card |
Card issuer |
If the charge is on an outside credit/debit card, use that issuer's dispute process too |
Escalation should match the product. CFPB is more appropriate for financial product complaints than a general product-review site, but a merchant dispute or outside card charge may still belong with the payment issuer.
What to Say in an Albert Complaint
Use this script:
"I need Albert to review a complaint for account [email/phone]. The issue is [subscription billing, Genius refund, account deactivation, Albert Cash transaction error, Albert Card unauthorized transaction, Instant advance, loan repayment, account lock, or linked-account issue]. The relevant record is [plan, charge date, transaction date, amount, merchant, due date, or support case]. I have attached [app screenshot, payment record, statement, receipt, deactivation attempt, repayment record, and prior support messages]. I am requesting [deactivation confirmation, written refund decision, transaction-error investigation, provisional credit status, repayment correction, account access review, or written explanation]. Please confirm the case status and next step in writing."
Useful follow-up questions:
- "Which Albert product does this charge belong to?"
- "Is this a Standard, Genius, or Family subscription charge?"
- "Does my deactivation cancel future subscription payments?"
- "Do I still owe an Instant advance or loan balance after deactivation?"
- "Was this card transaction a pending hold, a posted transaction, or an unauthorized transaction?"
- "Do you need my card dispute in writing within 10 business days?"
- "What is the expected investigation deadline?"
- "Can you confirm the decision in writing?"
