How to File a Complaint with Spokeo

File a Spokeo complaint for subscription billing, trial conversion, cancellation, refund review, account access, report accuracy, FCRA misuse concerns, opt-out requests, privacy rights, or data removal.

Spokeo complaints should be split into three categories before you contact support: billing, account/report use, and privacy or data removal. A subscription refund request is handled under Spokeo's Payment Policy. A profile removal request uses the opt-out tool. A privacy-rights request uses the privacy request routes. These are not the same workflow.

Spokeo's Payment Policy says trial and membership cancellations must be made before the stated deadline to prevent future billing, and that all premium content sales and membership plan payments are final and non-refundable. Its Privacy Policy says Spokeo accommodates public-listing removal requests even though public information is treated differently from personal information supplied to an account.

This page is for organizing a customer complaint. It is not legal advice and does not decide whether a listing is accurate, whether a dispute should go to arbitration, or whether a public record can be changed at its original source.

Best Spokeo Complaint Paths

Issue Start here What to include
Free trial converted to paid plan Account settings or Customer Care Account email, trial offer, signup date, last trial day, charge date
Membership cancellation Usage & Subscriptions in account settings Account email, plan, cancellation date, confirmation, PayPal status if relevant
Refund request Customer Care Charge date, amount, product, reason, cancellation attempt, confirmation records
Unknown charge Spokeo contact page and Customer Care Statement descriptor, date, amount, card owner, possible account emails
Account access or account takeover concern Customer Care or legal@spokeo.com when account access is compromised Account email, suspicious activity date, device or login details
Single report or search issue Customer Care Report purchased, search type, receipt, error screenshot, expected access
Report accuracy concern Customer Care and source-record review Profile URL, incorrect fields, source record if known, desired correction or explanation
Public listing removal Spokeo opt-out tool Exact profile URL, email address, confirmation email
Court record suppression expungement@spokeo.com Expunction or sealing order, exact record, profile URL
Personal-information privacy request Privacy control page or 1 (877) 864-0183 Account email, request type, verification information
Privacy appeal privacy@spokeo.com State, original request, denial or response, appeal reason
Copyright issue dmca@spokeo.com Copyrighted work, exact URL, owner authorization, required DMCA statements

Start with the narrow route. A billing complaint should not be mixed with a profile opt-out request, and a profile opt-out request will not remove data from government records, phone directories, or other original sources.

Step-by-Step: How to File a Spokeo Complaint

1 Identify the complaint type

Choose billing, trial conversion, cancellation, refund, unknown charge, account access, report accuracy, FCRA-use concern, opt-out, privacy, expungement, or copyright.

2 Gather the exact account and record details

Save the account email, statement descriptor, charge date, amount, product, profile URL, receipt, cancellation confirmation, support messages, and screenshots.

3 Use the matching Spokeo route first

Use Usage & Subscriptions for cancellation, Customer Care for billing and account access, the opt-out tool for public listings, and the privacy routes for privacy-rights requests.

4 Ask for one written result

Request cancellation confirmation, refund review, product-access fix, report explanation, public-listing removal, privacy response, appeal review, or next-step instructions.

5 Keep legal and privacy issues separate

If the issue involves FCRA restrictions, an expunged or sealed court record, copyright, or a privacy appeal, use the dedicated route instead of a generic billing message.

6 Escalate only with a complete packet

If Spokeo does not resolve the issue, prepare the support history, policy reference, dates, receipts, and requested outcome before using a card issuer, regulator, court, or arbitration route.

What to Have Ready Before Contacting Spokeo

Information Why it matters
Account email Locates the paid account or trial
Product type Separates trial, single report, membership, and credit-related products
Statement descriptor Helps match charges shown as SPK*SPOKEO, SPK*SPOKEO SEARCH, SPOKEO *8006994264, or SPOKEO.COM 8006994264
Charge date and amount Required for billing review
Trial start and last trial day Determines whether cancellation happened before conversion
Cancellation confirmation Shows whether future billing should have stopped
PayPal status Needed if the plan was paid through PayPal
Profile URL Required for public-listing removal and accuracy complaints
Receipt or order confirmation Confirms the product purchased
Support transcript Shows what Spokeo already decided
Court order Needed for expungement or sealing requests
Privacy request confirmation Needed for privacy appeals

Keep a separate folder for billing proof and privacy proof. A card statement helps with payment review, but the public-listing tool needs the exact Spokeo profile URL.

Subscription, Trial, and Refund Complaints

Spokeo's Payment Policy says trial terms are disclosed before purchase, and a trial that remains uncanceled after expiration converts to an ongoing subscription under that offer's terms. It also says cancellations of any trial product or membership plan must be received before 11:59 PM PT on the final day of the trial to prevent conversion and related charges.

For trial or membership cancellation, Spokeo says users can cancel online under Subscriptions or Usage & Subscriptions in account settings. The Payment Policy also lists Customer Care at 1-888-271-9562, available 7 days a week except Spokeo-observed holidays. If the plan was paid through PayPal, Spokeo says additional cancellation instructions are shown on the Usage & Subscriptions page.

For a refund complaint, understand the policy before writing:

Payment type Policy point to address
Free trial conversion Did cancellation reach Spokeo before 11:59 PM PT on the final trial day?
Membership plan Plans are prepaid and non-refundable under the Payment Policy
Single report Premium content sales are final under the Payment Policy
Partial billing period Spokeo says processed payments are not refunded or prorated for partial-month use
Future billing A canceled plan should not bill again after cancellation confirmation
PayPal payment Confirm both Spokeo cancellation and PayPal billing status

A strong complaint does not simply ask for an exception. It states the policy issue: wrong account, duplicate charge, cancellation confirmation before renewal, technical cancellation failure, PayPal cancellation mismatch, or product access failure.

Unknown Charge Complaints

Spokeo's contact page says charges can appear on a card statement as SPK*SPOKEO, SPK*SPOKEO SEARCH, SPOKEO *8006994264, or SPOKEO.COM 8006994264.

Before filing the complaint:

  1. Search every email address that may have created a Spokeo account.
  2. Check whether the purchase was a trial, membership plan, single report, or credit-related product.
  3. Check whether PayPal was used.
  4. Save the statement line with the date and amount visible.
  5. Ask Spokeo to identify the account or product connected to the descriptor.

If you recognize the account, use the subscription or refund route. If you do not recognize the account, state that the first request is account identification and billing authorization review.

Report Accuracy, FCRA, and Use-Restriction Complaints

Spokeo's Terms and site footer say Spokeo is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and that users should not use Spokeo for credit, insurance, employment, tenant screening, or other FCRA-covered purposes. The Terms also say Spokeo does not verify every piece of public information and cannot guarantee accuracy, legitimacy, or recency.

For a report accuracy complaint, include:

  • profile URL
  • screenshot of the inaccurate field
  • source record if you know it
  • whether the issue is spelling, address, phone, email, court record, business listing, or another field
  • whether you want an explanation, support review, opt-out, or court-record suppression
  • whether a court record has been sealed or expunged

Do not use the opt-out workflow as if it were a correction workflow. Opt-out removes a public listing from Spokeo display, but it does not change the original public source. If the issue is a sealed or expunged court record, Spokeo's Terms say to email the order to expungement@spokeo.com.

Public Listing Removal and Opt-Out Complaints

Spokeo's opt-out page says each listing has a unique URL and must be opted out individually. It also says opt-out does not remove data from the original source, information may still appear on other websites, and updated records can make a listing reappear later.

For a public listing removal request:

  1. Open the Spokeo profile.
  2. Copy the exact profile URL.
  3. Go to https://www.spokeo.com/optout.
  4. Enter the profile URL and an email address.
  5. Open the confirmation email and complete the request.
  6. Check the listing after the stated processing window.

Spokeo's opt-out page says the request should be processed in 24-48 hours, depending on the nature and amount of data. If the request fails, include the profile URL, confirmation email, time submitted, and screenshot when contacting Customer Care or privacy@spokeo.com.

Privacy Rights and Data Requests

Spokeo's Privacy Policy separates public information from personal information supplied through an account. It says public information is collected from sources such as consumer indexes, phone directories, email databases, property records, public profiles, court records, business directories, and vital statistics. It also says Spokeo does not verify and cannot guarantee the accuracy of that public information.

For personal-information privacy requests, Spokeo says users can request to know, correct, or delete personal information through its privacy control page or by calling 1 (877) 864-0183 during business hours. The policy says Spokeo may require account login or matching information to verify the request.

Use this split:

Request Best route
Remove a public listing Spokeo opt-out tool
Know public information Spokeo has collected Spokeo public-information privacy control route
Access, correct, or delete account personal information Spokeo account privacy control route or 1 (877) 864-0183
Appeal a denied privacy request privacy@spokeo.com with state and documentation
EU personal-data request Account tools or CustomerCare@spokeo.com; Data Protection Officer at privacy@spokeo.com
Covered person request, such as judge or law enforcement officer Route listed in the Privacy Policy; email CustomerCare@spokeo.com for additional assistance
Washington cell phone removal assistance Instructions in the Privacy Policy; email CustomerCare@spokeo.com if needed

Do not delete account information before saving billing records if you still need evidence for a payment complaint.

When to Escalate Beyond Spokeo

Situation Escalation path Notes
Future billing continues after confirmed cancellation Card issuer billing-error route or state consumer office Include cancellation confirmation and post-cancellation statement
Refund denied under stated policy Card issuer or consumer office only if there is a billing error or misapplied policy Include the Payment Policy point you are relying on
Trial converted after timely cancellation Customer Care, then card issuer billing-error route if unresolved Show the cancellation timestamp and trial deadline
Privacy request denied privacy@spokeo.com appeal or applicable privacy regulator Include state, request date, verification, and response
Public listing does not come down after opt-out Customer Care or privacy@spokeo.com Include profile URL and opt-out confirmation
Sealed or expunged court record appears expungement@spokeo.com, then legal or court-record source route if needed Include the exact court order and listing
Copyright issue dmca@spokeo.com Follow the DMCA notice requirements in the Terms
Contract dispute remains unresolved Spokeo's dispute-resolution process in the Terms Review the current Terms before sending a formal notice

Escalation works best when you can show the specific Spokeo policy, the exact date, and the missing outcome.

What to Say in a Spokeo Complaint

Use this script:

"I need Spokeo to review a complaint for account or listing [email/profile URL]. The issue is [trial conversion, membership cancellation, refund request, unknown charge, report access, report accuracy, public listing removal, privacy request, court-record suppression, or account access]. The relevant details are [charge date, amount, product, trial dates, cancellation date, statement descriptor, profile URL, privacy request date, or court order]. I have attached [receipt, card statement, cancellation confirmation, support transcript, opt-out confirmation, screenshot, or legal order]. I am requesting [cancellation confirmation, refund review, product access fix, listing removal, privacy response, appeal review, or written explanation]. Please confirm the next step and decision in writing."

Useful follow-up questions:

  • "Is this charge connected to a trial, membership plan, single report, or credit-related product?"
  • "Was my cancellation received before the final trial deadline?"
  • "Is the plan still active under Usage & Subscriptions?"
  • "Was PayPal used, and does PayPal show the same cancellation status?"
  • "Does this issue require Customer Care, the opt-out tool, the privacy request page, or an expungement email?"
  • "Does my profile URL have to be submitted separately from other listings?"
  • "Can Spokeo confirm the decision in writing?"
