How to Cancel Claude Pro (Anthropic Subscription)

Step-by-step guide to cancel Claude Pro. Learn where billing happens, what access you keep, and whether a refund applies.

I had Claude Pro on my to-cancel list for six weeks.

Not because I hated it — I didn't. But I'd switched to using a different tool for most of my work, and I kept paying $20 a month for a subscription I'd open maybe twice. Every time I thought about canceling, I'd get distracted, or talk myself into keeping it "just in case," or — honestly — assume it would take longer than I had time for.

It took me eleven minutes. Most of that was figuring out where I'd originally signed up.

That's the part that trips people up. The cancellation itself is straightforward. Finding the right place to cancel is where things get annoying — because Claude Pro can be billed through three different systems, and you can only cancel through whichever one you used to sign up. If you try to cancel in the wrong place, nothing happens. You just keep getting charged.

Here's exactly what I found.

Before You Cancel: Find Where You're Being Billed

This is the step most guides skip, and it's the one that matters most.

Check your bank or credit card statement. Find the Claude Pro charge and look at who it's from:

  • "Anthropic" — you signed up directly on the web at claude.ai
  • "Apple" or "App Store" — you subscribed through the iOS app
  • "Google" or "Google Play" — you subscribed through the Android app

Each of these has a completely different cancellation path — as Anthropic's official cancellation guide makes clear, you can only cancel through the platform you originally signed up on. I want to say that again clearly because it's the most common mistake: if you subscribed through iOS, you have to cancel through iOS. Anthropic's settings page won't show you that subscription at all.

One more thing before you proceed: if you're using Claude through the API (you're a developer, you have usage-based billing, you're looking at the Anthropic Console) — this guide is not for you. API billing is a different system entirely, and cancellation goes through your Console settings at console.anthropic.com.

Sign in to the Anthropic developer console to manage your account and cancel Claude Pro subscription easily.

Billed Directly via Anthropic (Web Signup)

This is the most common path for people who signed up at claude.ai on a desktop browser.

How to cancel:

To cancel Claude Pro, start by clicking your profile icon located in the bottom left corner of the chat interface.

  1. Go to claude.ai and make sure you're logged in
  2. Click your name or profile icon in the bottom-left corner
  3. Select Settings
  4. Go to Billing
  5. Find the subscription section and click Manage Plan or Cancel Plan
  6. Follow the prompts — Anthropic may ask why you're canceling before confirming

Navigate to the billing settings menu and click the adjust plan button to successfully cancel Claude Pro online.

Once you confirm, you should see a cancellation confirmation on screen and receive an email. If you don't get the email, check spam. If there's no confirmation at all, don't assume it worked — go back and check your billing settings again.

When does access end?

Your Claude Pro access continues until the end of your current billing period. So if you paid on the 1st and you cancel on the 15th, you keep Pro features through the end of the month. After that, your account reverts to the free tier. Your conversation history stays intact — you don't lose it.

Billed via Apple App Store (iOS)

If you subscribed via the iOS app, you must cancel Claude Pro directly through your Apple device settings.

You signed up through the Claude iOS app. Anthropic cannot cancel this for you. You have to do it through Apple.

How to cancel:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top (Apple ID)
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Find Claude or Anthropic in the list
  5. Tap it, then tap Cancel Subscription
  6. Confirm

Alternatively, you can manage it directly through the App Store. If you've already deleted the Claude app, Apple's support page on how to cancel an App Store subscription walks you through the web-based path.

You'll keep Pro access until the current billing period ends.

Billed via Google Play Store (Android)

Android users need to open the Google Play app to manage subscriptions and cancel Claude Pro from a mobile device.

Same logic as iOS — this has to be handled through Google, not Anthropic.

How to cancel:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right)
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions
  4. Tap Subscriptions
  5. Find Claude and tap it
  6. Tap Cancel subscription and confirm

You can also manage this on a desktop browser at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. If you run into issues, Google's official guide on canceling a Google Play subscription covers every platform including desktop, Android, and edge cases.

What Happens After You Cancel

Access: You keep Claude Pro features until the end of your current billing cycle. This is standard — Anthropic doesn't cut access immediately upon cancellation.

Your data: Conversation history stays in your account after downgrading. You don't lose it.

Refunds: Per Anthropic's refund policy, subscriptions are generally non-refundable — but if you've been charged in error or something went genuinely wrong, there's an in-app refund request flow worth going through before assuming the answer is no. Don't expect a refund just for canceling mid-cycle — but it doesn't hurt to ask if circumstances are unusual. For App Store or Google Play subscriptions, refund requests go through Apple or Google respectively, not Anthropic.

Follow these specific support instructions if you want to request a refund when you cancel Claude Pro subscription.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

You can't find the cancel option in claude.ai settings. This usually means you subscribed through iOS or Android — not the web. Check your billing statement to confirm. Then cancel through the appropriate App Store or Play Store path above.

You canceled but you're still being charged. First, confirm you actually completed the cancellation — not just started the process. Check for a confirmation email. If you're certain you canceled and charges continued, contact Anthropic support with your confirmation email as evidence. For App Store or Play Store subscriptions, contact Apple or Google support.

You see charges from both Anthropic and an App Store. This can happen if you subscribed twice — once on the web and once through an app, possibly by accident. Check both places. You may need to cancel in two places.

You can't find Claude in your App Store subscriptions list. Try searching under the app name ("Claude") rather than the company name. If it still doesn't appear, the subscription may be active under a different Apple ID or Google account. Check which account you originally used to download the app.

Cancellation Confirmation Checklist

Before you close the tab:

  • Received cancellation confirmation email from Anthropic (or App Store / Google Play)
  • Billing settings now show "Free" plan or no active subscription
  • Made note of when current billing period ends (access continues until then)
  • If you had any issues — documented them with screenshots, just in case

That's it. Eleven minutes, including the time it took me to find my original payment confirmation email to figure out where I'd signed up.

Want this handled without doing any of it yourself? Pine AI can manage subscription cancellations for you — including tracking down where you're billed and executing the cancellation. If you've got a list of subscriptions you've been meaning to clear out, it's worth testing.
