How to cancel Mailchimp through the correct billing owner
Web cancellation
Cancel Mailchimp through Web
1Open Account & billing
Sign in to Mailchimp in a desktop browser. Click your profile icon and choose **Account & billing** or **Account**, depending on what your navigation shows. This opens your account-level area where billing, plan management, and data export options live.
2Open Settings
From the Account & billing (or Account) area, find the **Settings** drop-down menu. Open it and select **Manage my plan**. This takes you to a dedicated page where you can see your current Marketing plan, pause options, and the control to delete the account.
- Let Pine handle it

Pine can find the right Web path and handle the cancellation for you.
3Choose Pause or delete account
On the **Manage my plan** page, review the **Temporarily pause my Marketing plan** section if you want to stop monthly Marketing billing but keep your account and data. Pausing is available for 3 or 6 months, is limited to two pauses every 12 months, keeps your audiences and reports accessible, and leaves any Websites plan active. If you’re sure you want to leave Mailchimp entirely, locate the **Delete my account** option instead.
4Select permanently delete and complete confirmation
If you decide to fully cancel, click **Delete my account**. Work through any suggestions or support offers, then click **Continue to delete**. Confirm by entering your password and typing **DELETE** in the fields shown, then click **Permanently delete**. Mailchimp requires that any outstanding balance be paid before deletion, and once deleted your account is permanently closed and Mailchimp removes data associated with audiences, campaign archives, and reports; it cannot be restored later.
Refund policy
Mailchimp refunds and billing adjustments
Mailchimp’s documentation separates stopping future charges from receiving money back. Refunds are rare and usually limited to system errors, unjustified terminations, or explicitly described guarantees for certain annual plans and promotions.
Check my refund options- Refunds are exceptional, not routine
- Mailchimp’s refund policy states it does not issue refunds unless a system malfunction caused a problem or the account was terminated without cause. This applies broadly to Monthly plans and Pay As You Go credits.
- Closing an account doesn’t backdate charges
- The Standard Terms of Use specify that Mailchimp won’t refund or reimburse you in any situation except where the Terms explicitly provide otherwise. Closing your account or downgrading a plan stops future service but doesn’t retroactively refund billed periods.
- No refunds for previously billed cycles after plan changes
- Both the Terms and promotional-offer terms emphasise that when you downgrade a Paid Marketing Plan or monthly plan, changes take effect at the end of the billing period and you will not receive a refund for charges already billed in that period.
- Limits on refunds for annual plans
- For annual Paid Marketing Plans, the Terms explain that closing your account mid‑cycle by contacting sales does not entitle you to a refund, except where a specified money‑back guarantee period applies as described in the Terms.
- Pay As You Go and credits cannot be cashed out
- Pay As You Go credits have no cash value, cannot be refunded or redeemed for cash, and simply represent a limited license to send up to a specified volume. Unused credits are not reimbursed if your account is terminated or expires.
If your situation involves a possible system malfunction, an unjustified termination, or questions about a money‑back guarantee on an annual plan, review Mailchimp’s refund policy and then contact its Billing team through the Help Center links on that page or from within your logged‑in account. Billing choices
Decide between pausing and deleting your Mailchimp account
Mailchimp separates pausing your Marketing plan from permanently deleting your entire account. Understanding what each option does helps you avoid unexpected loss of access or data.
How pausing your Marketing plan works
Pausing is available for monthly Marketing plans when you don’t need to send or publish for a while. From Manage my plan, you can pause your Marketing plan for 3 or 6 months, up to two times in any 12‑month period.
What stays available while paused
When paused, Mailchimp keeps your data so you can use the account again. You can still create and edit emails, view reports, and manage your audience, and any paid Websites plan remains active and billable unless you change it separately.
When to choose permanent deletion
Permanent deletion is for when you no longer need your Mailchimp account or its data at all. You access it from Manage my plan via **Delete my account**, then confirm permanent deletion, which closes the account and removes associated data.
Effect on data and recovery
After you permanently delete your account, it is permanently closed and cannot be restored. Mailchimp removes data associated with audiences, campaign archives, and reports rather than keeping it available for future reactivation.
Timing of billing changes
For monthly Paid Marketing Plans, pausing your subscription or deleting your account via Settings in Account & billing becomes effective immediately. In contrast, downgrading your plan type or contact tier normally takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.
End-of-term effects
What happens after you cancel or delete Mailchimp
How Mailchimp behaves after pausing, downgrading, cancelling individual plans, or deleting your account depends on the product involved.
Monthly Marketing plans after pause
While your Marketing plan is paused, recurring Marketing billing stops, automations don’t send, and Mailchimp shows an alert banner you can use to restart. When you restart, Mailchimp generally resumes your previous plan and begins billing again, subject to updated contact tiers.
Account state after deletion
Once you confirm permanent deletion, your Mailchimp account is closed and cannot be restored. Mailchimp removes data associated with your audiences, campaign archives, and reports, and you will no longer be able to sign in to use any Mailchimp services on that account.
Websites Plan behaviour
Websites Plans are billed monthly in advance. If you cancel a Websites Plan from your account, cancellation takes effect on the last day of the current billing cycle you’ve already paid for, and you agree to pay all fees owed for that cycle.
Text Messaging credit plans
Text Messaging Credit Plans bill monthly in addition to your Marketing plan. You can deactivate the Text Messaging Credit Plan from Settings in Account & billing. Deactivating your Mailchimp account disables Text Messaging immediately, and unused credits don’t roll into future billing cycles.
Automatic termination for inactivity
Under the Standard Terms of Use, Mailchimp may terminate inactive accounts (for example, accounts inactive for 24 months or more) and permanently delete the account and its data, without refunding prepaid amounts or unused Pay As You Go credits.
Protect your data
Export and back up Mailchimp data before closing
Mailchimp encourages you to back up your data before deleting an account. The platform offers an account-level export to keep copies of audiences, campaigns, and other data outside Mailchimp.
Account-level export option
Mailchimp provides an Export and Back Up Account Data tool that lets you create a ZIP file containing selected account data, like audiences, email content, templates, reports, gallery files, SMS data, events, appointments, and ecommerce data.
How to request an export
From your profile, go to Account, open the Settings menu, and choose **Manage my data**. On the Manage my data page, select the data types you want, choose a date range, and click **Export Data**. Mailchimp emails you when the export is ready and lets you download the ZIP from the Manage my data page.
Export frequency limits
You can generate one account export per 24‑hour period. Large accounts may take longer to process, and Mailchimp notifies you by email when the export file is ready to download.
What exports don’t include
Account exports don’t include deleted audiences, billing receipts, or the content of websites, landing pages, and ads. If you need receipts, you must save them separately from the billing history page in your account settings.
Back up before deletion
The Pause or Cancel Your Account article explicitly reminds you to back up your data before deleting your account, linking directly to the Export and Back Up Account Data help page for full instructions.
Plans and add‑ons
How plans, add-ons, and credits behave when you cancel
Mailchimp’s Marketing, Websites, Text Messaging, and Pay As You Go offerings each follow distinct rules when you pause, downgrade, or close your account.
Downgrading vs pausing a Marketing plan
You can downgrade your Marketing plan or contact tier from Monthly plans or credits. Downgrades apply at the start of your next billing cycle, and you remain on the higher tier for the current cycle. Pausing instead immediately stops monthly Marketing billing for 3 or 6 months without changing your plan tier.
Websites Plan changes
Changing a Websites Plan is done from Monthly plans or credits in the Websites Plan section. Upgrades take effect immediately with prorated billing, while downgrades apply at the end of the billing cycle. You can also downgrade to a free Websites plan without closing your Mailchimp account.
Pay As You Go credits
Mailchimp’s Terms state that Pay As You Go credits roll over but expire 12 months after purchase, have no cash value, and cannot be refunded or redeemed for cash; they only license use of the service up to the purchased volume.
Text Messaging add‑on plans
Text Messaging Credit Plans are billed monthly in addition to your Marketing plan. You can deactivate the Text Messaging plan via Settings in Account & billing. If you downgrade from an eligible Paid Marketing Plan, your Text Messaging Credit Plan deactivates in the following billing cycle and unused credits are forfeited.
Legacy and Websites eligibility limits
Some actions, like switching to Pay As You Go or adding a Websites plan, are restricted if you’re on certain legacy or Websites plans. For example, Websites Plan documentation notes that Pay As You Go users must move to a Standard Marketing plan before purchasing a Websites plan.
Payments & refunds
Refunds, downgrades, and chargebacks with Mailchimp
Closing a Mailchimp account and stopping billing is different from getting money back. Mailchimp’s policies are strict about refunds and explain how chargebacks affect your account.
General refund stance
Mailchimp’s refund policy states that, as a company policy, it does not issue refunds unless a system malfunction caused a problem or your account was terminated without cause.
No refunds for prior charges when changing plans
Mailchimp’s Terms and promotional offer terms specify that when you downgrade a Paid Marketing Plan or change a monthly plan, the change takes effect at the end of the billing period and you will not receive a refund for previously billed charges.
Annual Paid Marketing Plans
For annual Paid Marketing Plans, the Terms explain that if you close your account mid‑cycle by contacting sales, you will not receive a refund except when you are within a specified money‑back guarantee period referenced in the Terms.
Pay As You Go credits are non‑refundable
Pay As You Go credits are described as having no cash value, not refundable or redeemable for cash, and providing only a limited license to use the service. Unused credits are not reimbursed if your account is terminated or becomes inactive.
Chargebacks disable sending
If you request a chargeback through your card issuer, Mailchimp’s refund policy explains that sending is disabled in your account. To restore sending, you must go back to the Monthly plans or credits page and repurchase your order after the chargeback is resolved.
Fix access issues
If you can’t find billing or delete options in Mailchimp
When expected controls like Manage my plan or Delete my account are missing, the cause is usually user permissions, plan type, or unresolved billing issues.
Confirm you’re an Owner or Admin
Only Owners and Admins can view billing, change payment details, or close the account. If billing information or closure controls aren’t visible, check your user level under Settings → Users or ask the account Owner/Admin to perform the steps.
Look for Account & billing vs Account labels
Mailchimp’s help articles note that navigation labels may show either **Account & billing** or **Account**, depending on user type. If one label is missing, look for the other to reach the same account-level settings, then open the Settings menu there.
Outstanding balances must be resolved
Before you can permanently delete an account, Mailchimp requires that you pay any outstanding balance. If a pending charge or declined payment exists, resolve billing on the Monthly plans or credits or Billing information pages first.
Browser and payment method issues
If updates to your payment method fail, Troubleshooting Billing suggests clearing cached errors by removing the payment method, clearing browser cache and cookies, and re‑adding it, or contacting your bank or PayPal if declines persist.
QuickBooks-linked accounts
Manage User Levels notes that if you set up Mailchimp through QuickBooks, certain account pages and features may look different. In that case, still look for Account & billing and Settings menus to reach Manage my plan, or contact Mailchimp support from the Help Center if you cannot locate deletion controls.
Stay but spend less
Alternatives to cancelling your Mailchimp subscription
Mailchimp documents several ways to reduce costs or scale back usage without permanently deleting your account, which can be useful if you may return later.
Reduce contacts and change pricing tier
The Pause or Cancel Your Account article suggests lowering monthly costs by archiving inactive contacts or combining audiences, then changing your pricing tier so you’re billed for a smaller audience.
Downgrade feature plans
If you don’t need higher-tier features, you can downgrade from Premium or Standard to a lower Marketing plan type from the Monthly plans or credits page. Downgrades apply at the next billing cycle while keeping access to your current plan through the end of the current period.
Switch to Pay As You Go
For infrequent senders, Mailchimp recommends switching from a monthly Marketing plan to Pay As You Go credits. Purchasing credits automatically moves you to a Pay As You Go plan and stops monthly Marketing billing, though Websites and other add‑ons may still bill separately.
Pause instead of deleting
If you expect to return to Mailchimp, pausing the Marketing plan retains your data, automations, and audiences. You can pause for 3 or 6 months (up to two pauses in 12 months) and restart later from the alert banner without recreating your setup.
Downgrade Websites instead of closing the account
If costs are driven by a Websites Plan, you can downgrade it—potentially to a free Websites plan—on the Monthly plans or credits page. That lets you keep your Mailchimp login and Marketing tools while eliminating Websites subscription charges.
Data rights
Privacy rights and data erasure beyond account closure
Closing a Mailchimp account is one way to manage your data, but Mailchimp’s privacy documentation also explains formal rights requests you can make as a Member or Contact.
Member erasure via account settings
As a Member (customer), you can delete personal information Mailchimp holds about you by revoking your login profile or permanently closing your Mailchimp account, as described on the Privacy Rights Requests page.
Global erasure for Contacts
If you’re a Contact in someone else’s Mailchimp audience, you can use the Global Erasure Request option on the Privacy Rights Requests page to ask Mailchimp to notify Members who hold your data so they can permanently delete it from their Mailchimp accounts.
Mailchimp erasure request
Contacts may also submit a Mailchimp Erasure Request asking Mailchimp to delete any personal information it processes as a controller, separate from what individual Members hold in their own accounts.
How to submit a rights request
Privacy Rights Requests are submitted through a form on Mailchimp’s site, which verifies your identity and lets you select rights such as access, portability, or deletion. The page also provides the option to send requests by email.
Relationship between account deletion and privacy rights
The Privacy Rights Requests page explains that, for Members, closing your Mailchimp account permanently is treated as an exercise of the right to erasure, while Contacts usually need to work with the business (the Member) that added them to its audience.
