How to cancel Squarespace through the correct billing owner

Web cancellation

Cancel Squarespace through Web

  1. Squarespace web cancellation: Open the site dashboard
    1

    Open the site dashboard

Go to the Squarespace login page in a browser, sign in, and open your account dashboard. From the list of sites, choose the specific website you want to stop paying for so its site dashboard and left-hand navigation open. Make sure you’re using an account with Owner, Admin, or Billing permissions on this site, or you won’t see full billing options.

  2. Squarespace web cancellation: Open Billing
    2

    Open Billing

In the site dashboard, open the site settings area (for example, by clicking the settings gear at the bottom of the navigation) and select the Billing panel. This opens a page showing the site’s active subscriptions, invoices, and payment details so you can manage website billing separately from domains, Google Workspace, and other services.

  4. Squarespace web cancellation: Select the website subscription
    3

    Select the website subscription

In the Billing panel, look for the Subscriptions section and click the Website or Store subscription (the entry that represents the website plan you want to cancel). Confirm that the plan name and billing cycle shown here match the site and subscription you intend to stop so you don’t accidentally change billing for another site or add-on.

  5. Squarespace web cancellation: Choose Cancel subscription and confirm
    4

    Choose Cancel subscription and confirm

With the website subscription open, click Cancel subscription. Review the cancellation details page and, if offered, choose Retain Access to let the site stay online until the end of the current billing cycle or Get Refund Immediately to end service right away with a refund if your annual plan is still within the published refund window. Continue through the survey screens, review the Your other subscriptions panel, and click Cancel subscription again to finalize. Afterward, visiting your site from any domain will show a “Website expired” message, and in Billing you’ll see the subscription marked ended with an option to resubscribe instead of cancel.

Refund policy

Refunds when you cancel a Squarespace website subscription

Squarespace’s refund rules distinguish sharply between annual and monthly website plans, between first-time purchases and renewals, and between Squarespace-billed subscriptions and Mobile Start plans billed through Apple. Understanding those boundaries helps you time cancellation correctly and know when requesting a refund is realistic under their policies.

Check my refund options
Annual website subscriptions have a 14-day refund window
Squarespace’s website refund policy allows you to request a full refund on an annual website subscription if you cancel within 14 days of the first purchase. After that 14‑day period, annual website plans are non-refundable, though you can still cancel to stop future renewals.
Monthly website subscriptions and renewals aren’t refundable
Monthly website plans aren’t eligible for refunds under the published policy, and Squarespace also doesn’t refund renewal payments for any website billing plan. If you don’t want to be charged again, you need to cancel before the listed renewal date shown in your Billing panel invoices.
Free domains affect the refund amount
If you received a free Squarespace domain with an annual plan and cancel within the 14‑day refund window, Squarespace deducts the domain’s registration cost from the refunded amount. The domain subscription itself continues and must be canceled or set to stop auto-renew separately if you don’t want it to renew.
Mobile Start refunds are handled by Apple
Mobile Start website plans purchased in the Squarespace iOS app are charged through Apple. Squarespace explains that it can’t directly refund those in-app purchases; instead, you must follow Apple’s process to request a refund if you cancel a Mobile Start plan before it naturally expires.
Other subscription types follow separate policies
Domains, Email Campaigns, Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling, Digital Products, and some other add-ons have their own refund terms. Squarespace maintains a consolidated refunds overview so you can check which products are refundable and under what conditions before you cancel those subscriptions.

Review Squarespace’s current refund guidance for website, domain, and other subscriptions before you cancel so you can time changes within any applicable refund windows. Open Squarespace refund policy overview

Scope & effects

What canceling a Squarespace website subscription does

Key behaviors of Squarespace’s website cancellation flow so you know exactly what will and won’t change when you stop your plan.

  • Stops website billing and auto-renew

Canceling through the Billing panel ends the website subscription’s automatic renewals. The subscription either stops at the end of the current billing cycle or immediately, depending on the option you select at cancellation and your eligibility for a refund window.

  • Takes the site offline with an expired message

Once your website subscription actually ends, visiting any domain connected to the site shows a “Website expired” message and hides the site’s content from visitors, while keeping owner access to backend panels.

  • Leaves other subscriptions active by default

Website cancellation doesn’t automatically cancel Squarespace domains, Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling, Email Campaigns, or other subscriptions. Those services continue to renew until you cancel or disable auto-renew for each one individually.

  • Keeps your account and data available for management

Even after the site is expired, account holders can still log in to view invoices, manage domain subscriptions, access contacts and order history, and export available site content, rather than losing everything on the cancellation date.

Refunds

Squarespace website refund boundaries

Summary of when Squarespace will and won’t refund website subscription charges, based on its current website refund policy.

  • Annual website plans

Squarespace states you can request a full refund for an annual website subscription if it’s canceled within 14 days of the first purchase. You must submit a refund request, and cancellations of annual plans after that 14‑day window are non-refundable under their policy.

  • Monthly website plans and renewals

Monthly website subscriptions aren’t eligible for refunds under the published policy. Renewal payments for any website plan—monthly or annual—are also non-refundable, so you should cancel before the next renewal date if you don’t want to be charged again.

  • Free domain offers tied to annual plans

If you received a free Squarespace domain with an annual website plan and then cancel within the 14‑day refund period, Squarespace deducts the domain’s cost from your website refund. The domain itself continues as a separate, renewing subscription unless you cancel or disable auto-renew for it.

  • Mobile Start website plans bought in-app

Mobile Start website plans are one-time 30‑day purchases made through the Squarespace iOS app and processed by Apple. Squarespace’s policy directs you to request any Mobile Start refunds from Apple, as Squarespace can’t issue refunds for those Apple-managed transactions.

  • Refunds for other Squarespace subscriptions

Other products like domains, Email Campaigns, Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling, and Digital Products have their own refund policies. Squarespace centralizes these in a dedicated refund-policy overview and may treat each subscription type differently from website plans.

Domains & email

Domains and Google Workspace when you cancel

How your custom domains and Squarespace-managed email behave when you end a website subscription.

  • Squarespace domains don’t end with the website

If you registered your domain through Squarespace, canceling the website subscription doesn’t cancel the domain. The domain remains yours, keeps auto-renewing on its schedule, and continues billing until you cancel it or disable auto-renew.

  • Options for Squarespace-registered domains

Before or after canceling your site, you can keep the domain with Squarespace, move it to another Squarespace site, transfer it to a different registrar, or turn off auto-renew so it expires at the end of the current term.

  • Domain cancellation and refund windows

For most generic top-level domains registered with Squarespace, you can cancel within five days of registration for a refund. Older domains, transferred-in domains, and many country-code domains don’t have this grace period and should instead have auto-renew turned off if you want them to lapse.

  • Google Workspace email stays active

If you manage Google Workspace through Squarespace, canceling your website subscription doesn’t automatically end your email service. That subscription continues to bill through your account until you follow Google Workspace-specific cancellation or transfer steps.

After cancellation

Access to your site and data after canceling

What you can still see and manage in Squarespace once your website subscription has been canceled or expired.

  • Backend access to key panels

After a site expires, you can still log in and access panels like Contacts, Products & Services, Scheduling, Email Campaigns, and, where applicable, Digital Products. This lets you review customers, orders, appointments, and some member data even though the public site is offline.

  • Settings you can still manage

From the expired site’s settings, you can open the Billing panel to review invoices, the Domains & Email panel to manage domains and Google Workspace, the Import & export content panel to export available site content, and the Permissions & Ownership panel to adjust contributor access.

  • Impact on digital memberships and subscriptions

If your site used Digital Products memberships, Squarespace pauses those subscriptions when the website subscription ends. Members lose access to member areas until you upgrade to a compatible current plan or otherwise restore service, but your configuration and pricing plans remain available for a period to resume.

  • Search engine and visitor experience

After cancellation takes effect, your site becomes private, search engines stop indexing its content, and visitors see a Website expired notice on all connected domains. Search engines may take several weeks to fully remove the old URLs from their results.

iOS & Mobile Start

Mobile Start plans and Apple-managed billing

How Mobile Start website plans purchased through the Squarespace iOS app fit into cancellation and refunds.

  • What a Mobile Start plan is

Mobile Start is a 30‑day website plan you buy as an in-app purchase in the Squarespace iOS app. It’s valid for a single month, doesn’t auto-renew, and is meant as a lightweight way to upgrade a trial from a phone before moving onto a standard website plan.

  • Stopping a Mobile Start plan early

If you want to stop using a Mobile Start plan before its 30 days are up, Squarespace directs you to cancel and request a refund through Apple’s systems. Because Apple processes the payment, Squarespace itself can’t refund Mobile Start charges.

  • Moving from Mobile Start to a standard plan

After a Mobile Start plan ends or is canceled, you can switch the site to a standard Squarespace website subscription from a desktop browser. Once you upgrade to a standard plan on that site, you can’t return that same site to a Mobile Start billing model.

  • Feature and add-on limitations on Mobile Start

Mobile Start plans don’t include access to some add-ons, including Google Workspace, Squarespace domain registration or transfer, and certain media or commerce tools. If you need those services, you’ll need to move to a standard website plan and then manage those subscriptions separately.

Alternatives

Alternatives to canceling your Squarespace subscription

Options to reduce costs or hide your site without immediately ending your Squarespace website billing relationship.

  • Change plan or billing cycle instead of canceling

Rather than canceling, you can downgrade to a lower-tier website plan or change between monthly and annual billing in the Billing panel. Squarespace’s plan-change flow lets eligible users adjust pricing level and cycle while keeping the site online and preserving its content.

  • Hide the site or require a password

If you mainly want visitors to stop seeing the site, you can change Site Availability to Private or set a site-wide password. This keeps the subscription active and billing unchanged, but removes public access or restricts it to people who know the password.

  • Delete selected content or redesign the site

Before canceling, you can delete specific pages, posts, or sections, or even strip out content and rebuild on the same subscription. Squarespace supports deleting content, moving items to Deleted Pages for a time, and redesigning while the website plan stays active.

  • Full exit: cancel, then delete site or account

If you’re leaving Squarespace entirely, the recommended order is to cancel subscriptions, manage or transfer any Squarespace domains, and only then delete the site or account. Deleting a site or account is irreversible and should be done after you’ve already stopped billing and exported needed data.

Troubleshooting

If you can’t see the Squarespace Cancel button

Steps to take when the expected Cancel subscription control doesn’t appear in your Squarespace Billing panel.

  • Confirm you’re in the correct site and Billing panel

First, make sure you’ve opened the right site from your account dashboard. Then open its Billing panel via site settings and look under Subscriptions for the Website or Store entry. The Cancel subscription option only appears when you’re viewing a specific active subscription.

  • Check your contributor permissions

Only the site Owner, Administrators, and contributors granted Billing permissions can change or cancel subscriptions. If you’re a Website editor, Store manager without Billing, or another limited role, ask the owner or an admin to either adjust your permissions or perform the cancellation for you.

  • Look for a resubscribing instead of canceling state

If the website subscription has already been canceled and has reached the end of its billing cycle, the Billing panel won’t show Cancel subscription. Instead, you’ll typically see an option to resubscribe, indicating the plan is inactive and no further website-renewal charges will occur.

  • Third-party or reseller-managed sites

If your website subscription was purchased through a third-party reseller instead of directly from Squarespace, your Squarespace dashboard may not include full billing controls for that site. In that case, you must cancel or disable auto-renew with the reseller, and you may need to contact support if the site still appears active in your account.

Commerce

Commerce orders, subscriptions, and gift cards

How Squarespace Commerce behavior changes when you cancel a website subscription, and what stays under your control.

  • Storefront and customer subscriptions stop

When you cancel a Commerce-enabled Squarespace site, the storefront goes offline with the rest of the site and Squarespace cancels active customer subscriptions tied to that store. New visitors can’t place orders on that site once the Website expired state is in effect.

  • Order and payment history remain accessible

After cancellation, you can still open the Products & Services panel to review past orders, payment details, and customer records. You can issue refunds for eligible orders through the standard commerce refund tools, subject to limits set by each payment processor.

  • Gift cards persist but can’t move to another site

Squarespace notes that active gift card balances don’t expire, but they can’t be refunded or transferred to another site when you cancel your subscription. Before ending the site, you should cancel and refund gift cards where appropriate according to Squarespace’s Commerce refund workflow.

  • Order cancellation separate from subscription cancellation

Canceling a Squarespace website subscription doesn’t itself cancel or refund individual commerce orders. Those actions are managed per-order in the Orders area, where you can move orders back to a pending state if needed and issue full or partial refunds using the commerce tools.

Squarespace cancellation FAQ

Provider-specific answers based on official sources checked August 10, 2026. Signed-in terms, region, billing owner, and applicable law still control.

You can usually choose either to end at the end of the billing cycle or immediately. When you click Cancel subscription in the Billing panel, Squarespace shows cancellation details where you can pick Retain Access (end at the current cycle’s end) or Get Refund Immediately if you qualify for an annual-plan refund. Monthly plans can still be canceled but aren’t eligible for refunds.
Canceling a Squarespace website subscription doesn’t cancel a Squarespace-registered domain. The domain remains yours, keeps auto-renewing on its schedule, and continues billing until you transfer it away, move it to another Squarespace site, or turn off auto-renew so it expires. If the domain was bought elsewhere and only connected, you’ll manage its billing and cancellation with that external registrar.
Under Squarespace’s current website refund policy, renewal payments are not refundable, and monthly website subscriptions are never refunded. Only first-time purchases of annual website plans canceled within 14 days qualify for a full website-plan refund, subject to adjustments for any free domain. You can still cancel after renewal to prevent future billing, but the renewal that already processed normally isn’t returned.
After completing the cancellation flow, revisit the site’s Billing panel and check the Subscriptions section. The Website or Store plan should show as expired or inactive with an option to resubscribe rather than Cancel subscription. Visiting your site’s domains should display a Website expired page. If billing still shows a future Payment due date, the subscription hasn’t been fully canceled yet.
Yes. Squarespace says you can log back into your account dashboard and reactivate a canceled or expired site by starting a new website plan. Your previous content and many settings are preserved for reactivation. However, legacy pricing plans can’t be restored, so you’ll need to choose from the current website plans when you bring the site back online.
No. Squarespace treats these as independent subscriptions. When you cancel a website plan, domains, Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling, Email Campaigns, and some other services can stay active and keep billing. You must cancel or disable auto-renew for each subscription you no longer want, typically via the Domains & Email panel, Scheduling panel, or relevant product-specific cancellation guides.
When your Squarespace website subscription ends, the site becomes private and shows a Website expired notice on connected domains, and Squarespace notes that search engines stop indexing the content. Existing search listings don’t disappear instantly, though; it can take several weeks for major search engines to fully drop your old URLs from their results after cancellation.
Canceling a Squarespace website subscription only stops billing and takes the site offline; it doesn’t delete the site’s content or your Squarespace account. To permanently remove a site, you must delete the site after canceling its subscriptions. To erase your overall account and associated data, you must separately follow Squarespace’s account deletion process once all subscriptions and domains are addressed.
