Paid extra for a preferred seat, extra legroom, or a Main Cabin Extra upgrade — and now something changed? Here's when American Airlines owes you a refund on that upgrade fee, and how to get it.
When American Airlines Will Refund a Seat Upgrade Fee
1. American Airlines Cancels Your Flight
If AA cancels your flight entirely, all ancillary fees are refunded — including seat selection fees, upgrade charges, and baggage fees. This is required under DOT rules. The refund goes back to your original payment method within 7 business days.
2. American Airlines Changes Your Aircraft
If a plane swap removes your paid seat, American Airlines must refund the seat fee. This happens automatically in most cases — check your email for a refund notice within 48 hours of the change.
3. You're Involuntarily Downgraded
If you paid for a premium seat and were moved to a lower seat category without consent, you're entitled to a refund of the difference. Call 1-800-433-7300 immediately and reference the involuntary downgrade.
4. You Cancel Within 24 Hours of Booking
If you cancel your entire booking within 24 hours of purchase (and the flight is 2+ days away), all fees — including seat upgrades — are refunded in full.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get a refund if I'm moved out of my paid seat at the gate? Yes. If an agent reassigns you to a different seat involuntarily, you're entitled to a refund of the seat fee. Ask the gate agent before boarding or call 1-800-433-7300 after your trip.
I paid for an upgrade with miles. Do I get them back? Yes — if AA cancels the flight or you cancel before departure, miles are redeposited to your AAdvantage account, typically within 24–48 hours.
What if the refund never shows up? Wait 2 full billing cycles. If it still hasn't appeared, contact AA with your refund confirmation number, then dispute the charge with your credit card issuer.
