When American Airlines Will Refund a Seat Upgrade Fee

1. American Airlines Cancels Your Flight

If AA cancels your flight entirely, all ancillary fees are refunded — including seat selection fees, upgrade charges, and baggage fees. This is required under DOT rules. The refund goes back to your original payment method within 7 business days.

2. American Airlines Changes Your Aircraft

If a plane swap removes your paid seat, American Airlines must refund the seat fee. This happens automatically in most cases — check your email for a refund notice within 48 hours of the change.

3. You're Involuntarily Downgraded

If you paid for a premium seat and were moved to a lower seat category without consent, you're entitled to a refund of the difference. Call 1-800-433-7300 immediately and reference the involuntary downgrade.

4. You Cancel Within 24 Hours of Booking

If you cancel your entire booking within 24 hours of purchase (and the flight is 2+ days away), all fees — including seat upgrades — are refunded in full.

  1. Go to refunds.aa.com
  2. Enter ticket number and last name
  3. Select "Seat fee" or "Ancillary service" as the refund type
  4. Submit — confirmation sent by email

By phone: Call 1-800-433-7300 and say: "I'd like a refund on a seat upgrade fee for a cancelled or changed flight."

At the airport: If your flight was cancelled day-of, any AA ticket counter agent can process the seat fee refund on the spot.

How Long Does the Seat Upgrade Refund Take?

Same as all AA refunds: 7 business days for credit cards to process, then 1–2 billing cycles to appear on your statement.
