You booked a hotel through American Express Travel, then found the same room for less on another site. Good news: Amex has a Lowest Rate Guarantee (also called the Best Rate Guarantee) that promises to match or refund the difference.

Bad news: actually claiming it can be confusing, and the online forms do not always work. Here is how to get your refund.

What Is the Amex Lowest Rate Guarantee?

The Lowest Rate Guarantee applies to hotel bookings made through Amex Travel (amextravel.com or through the Amex app). If you find the same hotel, same room type, same dates, and same cancellation policy for a lower rate on another site within 24 hours of booking, Amex will refund the difference.

Requirements:

  • Booked through Amex Travel (not directly with the hotel)
  • Lower rate found within 24 hours of your Amex booking
  • Same hotel, same room type, same dates
  • Same cancellation policy (non-refundable vs. refundable must match)
  • The comparison rate must be publicly available (not a members-only or error rate)

Step 1: Document the Lower Rate

Before you file a claim:

  1. Screenshot the lower rate on the competing site — include the hotel name, room type, dates, total price, and cancellation policy
  2. Note the URL of the competing listing
  3. Compare carefully — the room type must be an exact match (e.g., "Standard King" vs. "Deluxe King" are different)
  4. Save your Amex booking confirmation for reference

Step 2: File Your Claim

Online form (if it works):

  • Log into your Amex account
  • Navigate to your Amex Travel bookings
  • Look for the "Best Rate Guarantee" or "Lowest Rate Guarantee" claim option
  • Submit your screenshots and competing rate details

By phone (recommended):

If the online form is not working (which happens):

  • Call Amex Travel: 1-800-297-2977 (Platinum) or the number on your card
  • Reference your booking number
  • Explain that you found a lower rate and want to file a Lowest Rate Guarantee claim
  • Provide the competing site, rate, and room details
  • The agent will process the claim and confirm the refund

Phone claims are often faster and more reliable than the online form.

Step 3: Follow Up

After filing:

  • Ask for a reference number or confirmation email
  • Check your statement within 1-2 billing cycles for the credit
  • Follow up if the credit does not appear within 4-6 weeks

Common Issues and How to Handle Them

"The rate does not match"

Make sure the room type, dates, and cancellation policy are identical. A refundable rate on the competing site versus a non-refundable rate on Amex does not qualify.

"The 24-hour window has passed"

The guarantee is strict about the 24-hour window. Set an alert to check rates immediately after booking.

"The online form is broken"

This is a known issue. Call Amex Travel directly — phone agents can process the claim manually.

"The rate is members-only"

Rates that require membership, loyalty status, or a coupon code do not qualify. The competing rate must be publicly available to anyone.

Quick Checklist

  • [ ] Book through Amex Travel (amextravel.com or app)
  • [ ] Check competing sites within 24 hours of booking
  • [ ] Screenshot the lower rate with all details visible
  • [ ] Verify same room type, dates, and cancellation policy
  • [ ] File a claim online or call Amex Travel
  • [ ] Get a reference number
  • [ ] Check your next 1-2 statements for the credit

Bottom Line

The Amex Lowest Rate Guarantee is a real benefit, but it requires attention to detail and timely action. Book through Amex Travel, immediately check competing rates, and document everything. If the online form gives you trouble, call Amex Travel directly — the phone agents can process your claim reliably.

If comparing rates across sites and filing the claim feels like more hassle than the savings justify, an AI assistant can do the rate comparison, file the guarantee claim, and follow up on the credit for you.
