Baggage fees add up — $35 to $45 per bag each way on American Airlines. When things go wrong, many passengers don't realize they can get those fees back. Here's when AA owes you a baggage fee refund and how to claim it.

When American Airlines Will Refund Baggage Fees

1. AA Cancels Your Flight

If American Airlines cancels your flight, all baggage fees are refunded automatically along with your ticket. You do not need to request this separately — it should appear within 7 business days.

If it doesn't appear, call 1-800-433-7300 and reference your cancelled flight. Ask for a manual refund of both the ticket and baggage fees.

2. Significant Schedule Change

If AA changes your flight by 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international) and you choose not to travel, baggage fees are refunded along with your ticket.

3. Your Bag Is Lost or Significantly Delayed

Situation Baggage Fee Refund?
Bag delayed 12+ hours (domestic) Yes — typically automatic
Bag delayed 24+ hours (international) Yes — request required
Bag permanently lost Yes — plus compensation claim

For delayed and lost bags, file a report at the AA baggage service office at the airport immediately. Keep your baggage claim tag — you'll need it for the refund and any compensation claim.

4. You Cancel Within the 24-Hour Window

If you cancel your entire booking within 24 hours of purchase (and the flight is 2+ days away), all fees including baggage are refunded in full.

5. You Were Involuntarily Bumped

If you were bumped from your flight involuntarily, any pre-paid baggage fees must be refunded.

6. AAdvantage Elite Status Entitlement

If you paid a baggage fee that should have been waived due to your AAdvantage status or co-branded credit card, call AA — they'll refund the fee. Have your AAdvantage number and card details ready.

When AA Will NOT Refund Baggage Fees

  • You voluntarily cancel a non-refundable ticket
  • You no-show for your flight
  • Your bag arrived (even if delayed briefly)
  • You're downgraded but still travel on the new fare
