Should you contact Mailchimp first?

Use this Mailchimp check to choose between an official account action and help preparing a clearer follow-up.

  1. Confirm the billing owner before canceling

    • You cancel a Mailchimp subscription from the web app by going to Account & billing, opening the Settings ▾ menu, and using Manage my plan. From there you can either pause your Marketing plan (stopping monthly Marketing billing but keeping your data) or permanently delete your account, which closes the account and removes audiences, campaigns, and reports once any outstanding balance is paid. Websites plans, Text Messaging, and other add‑ons may need separate changes, because downgrades and Websites cancellations follow different end‑of‑term rules than full account deletion.
    • Mailchimp only lets account Owners and Admins view and change billing information or close the account. Owners and Admins can edit billing details and close the account, while Managers, Authors, and Viewers cannot access billing or perform closure. If you don’t see Account & billing, Manage my plan, or Delete my account, you’re likely not an Owner or Admin and must ask someone with that role to complete cancellation. Account interfaces may also look different if the account was set up through QuickBooks or another Intuit product, but the billing permissions remain tied to the Owner/Admin roles.
    • Mailchimp’s documentation separates stopping future charges from receiving money back. Refunds are rare and usually limited to system errors, unjustified terminations, or explicitly described guarantees for certain annual plans and promotions.
  2. Keep enough proof for a focused follow-up

    • Save the confirmation, effective date, and billing receipt.
    • Capture the plan, renewal date, and company shown on the receipt.
    • Challenge only a specific unresolved charge or cancellation result.

How Pine helps with Mailchimp

A practical workflow for moving from a messy support problem to a clear request.

  1. Step 01

    Open Account & billing

Sign in to Mailchimp in a desktop browser. Click your profile icon and choose **Account & billing** or **Account**, depending on what your navigation shows. This opens your account-level area where billing, plan management, and data export options live.

  2. Step 02

    Open Settings

From the Account & billing (or Account) area, find the **Settings** drop-down menu. Open it and select **Manage my plan**. This takes you to a dedicated page where you can see your current Marketing plan, pause options, and the control to delete the account.

  3. Step 03

    Choose Pause or delete account

On the **Manage my plan** page, review the **Temporarily pause my Marketing plan** section if you want to stop monthly Marketing billing but keep your account and data. Pausing is available for 3 or 6 months, is limited to two pauses every 12 months, keeps your audiences and reports accessible, and leaves any Websites plan active. If you’re sure you want to leave Mailchimp entirely, locate the **Delete my account** option instead.

  4. Step 04

Select permanently delete and complete confirmation

If you decide to fully cancel, click **Delete my account**. Work through any suggestions or support offers, then click **Continue to delete**. Confirm by entering your password and typing **DELETE** in the fields shown, then click **Permanently delete**. Mailchimp requires that any outstanding balance be paid before deletion, and once deleted your account is permanently closed and Mailchimp removes data associated with audiences, campaign archives, and reports; it cannot be restored later.

Mailchimp FAQs

Short answers for the questions people usually ask before starting.

Deleting your Mailchimp account from Settings → Manage my plan is effective immediately for monthly Paid Marketing Plans, and your account is permanently closed. However, Websites Plans and some add‑ons have their own cancellation rules; cancelling a Websites Plan in your account only takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and Text Messaging plans may also need to be deactivated separately.
When you permanently delete your Mailchimp account, the Pause or Cancel Your Account article explains that the account is permanently closed and can’t be restored, and Mailchimp removes data associated with audiences, campaign archives, and reports. If you need this information later, you should first use the Export and Back Up Account Data tool to download a ZIP file containing audiences, templates, campaigns, reports, and other data.
Yes. Mailchimp lets you pause a monthly Marketing plan from Settings → Manage my plan. You can choose a 3‑ or 6‑month pause, limited to two pauses every 12 months. While paused, Marketing billing stops but your audiences, campaigns, and reports remain accessible, and your Websites plan continues to run. When you’re ready, you restart from the alert banner in your account.
Mailchimp’s Terms say Pay As You Go credits roll over but expire 12 months after purchase, have no cash value, and cannot be refunded or redeemed for cash. They function as a limited license to use the service. If your account is terminated or becomes inactive under the Terms, you are not entitled to a refund or reimbursement for unused credits, so it’s best to use them before closing your account.
To cancel or downgrade a Websites Plan while keeping your Mailchimp login, go to Account & billing, open the Billing menu, and choose Monthly plans or credits. In the Websites Plan section, click Change Plan and select a lower tier or free plan. Downgrades take effect at the end of the billing cycle; until then, you keep current Websites features and charges.
Only account Owners and Admins can view and edit billing information or close the account. The Manage User Levels article notes that Owners can perform all actions, including editing billing and closing the account, and Admins share those permissions; Managers, Authors, and Viewers cannot. If you lack these options, ask the Owner or an Admin to adjust your user level or perform the cancellation.
Mailchimp’s Privacy Rights Requests page lets you submit formal access or deletion requests. As a Member, you can ask Mailchimp to delete personal data it holds by revoking your login profile or requesting permanent account closure through the linked tools. As a Contact in someone else’s audience, you can submit a Global Erasure or Mailchimp Erasure request so Mailchimp and the relevant Members can remove your data.
Before deleting your account, Mailchimp recommends backing up your data. The Pause or Cancel Your Account article links to Export and Back Up Account Data, which can create a ZIP file with audiences, campaign content, templates, reports, gallery assets, SMS data, and ecommerce information. You’ll receive an email when the export is ready, and can download it from the Manage my data page inside your account.
