Amazon Prime

How to Cancel Amazon Prime Subscription

Amazon Prime started way back in 2005, promising fast, free shipping. Now it's a giant bundle of services including Prime Video, Music, and more. Maybe you signed up to watch the 'Fallout' series and now you're done, or maybe the cost just isn't worth it anymore. It happens. With subscription prices ranging from $14.99 to $139, canceling can save you up to $139 a year. This guide covers how to cancel on your desktop or mobile device (iOS and Android) without the headache.

How to Cancel Amazon Prime Subscription on Desktop

Canceling on a computer is the most straightforward way. You just need to navigate a few menus designed to make you reconsider. Just keep your eyes on the prize.

1 Log In to Your Amazon Account

Go to Amazon.com and log in to your account. Make sure you're using the right login if you have multiple accounts.

2 Navigate to Prime Membership

Hover over 'Account & Lists' in the top-right corner. A dropdown menu will appear. Click on 'Prime Membership'.

3 Find the 'End Membership' Link

On the Prime Membership page, look for the 'Manage Membership' box. Click the 'End Membership' link. They don't make it obvious.

4 Confirm You Want to Cancel

This is where it gets annoying. Amazon will show you all the benefits you're about to lose. You have to scroll down and click 'I Do Not Want My Benefits' or a similarly worded button. They really try to make you stay.

5 Continue to Cancel (Again)

They might offer you a monthly plan if you're on annual, or another deal. Keep scrolling and click 'Continue to Cancel'. You might have to do this more than once. I had to click through three pages before it was final.

6 Select the Final Cancellation Date

Finally, you'll reach a page where you can select 'End on [Your Renewal Date]'. Once you click it, you're done. You should receive a confirmation email shortly after.

How to Cancel Amazon Prime Subscription on Mobile (iOS & Android)

Thinking you can cancel in the app? Nope. Amazon makes you use your phone's web browser. It's an extra step, but it works the same as the desktop version. Just a bit more tapping.

1 Open a Web Browser

You can't cancel your subscription directly through the Amazon Shopping app. It's a common frustration. You need to open a web browser like Safari or Chrome on your phone.

2 Go to Amazon.com and Sign In

Go to the Amazon website and sign in. It might ask you to open the app, but just continue in the browser.

3 Find Your Prime Membership Page

Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) and go to 'Your Account'. From there, find and tap on 'Prime Membership'.

4 Tap 'End Membership'

Just like on desktop, you'll need to find the 'Manage Membership' section and tap 'End Membership'. Weirdly, this page can be slow to load on mobile, so give it a second.

5 Follow the Prompts to Cancel

Follow the on-screen prompts. You'll have to tap 'Continue to Cancel' a couple of times as Amazon reminds you of your benefits. Just push through.

Cancel Amazon Prime Subscription with phone

If clicking buttons isn't working, you can call Amazon support.

  • Phone Number: 1-888-280-4331
  • Hours: 24/7
  • What to expect: You'll likely go through an automated system first. Just say 'Prime Membership' or 'Speak to an agent' to get to a human. One user on Reddit said, 'I had to call twice. The first rep tried to offer me a free month instead of canceling.' Be firm and just say you want to cancel.

Cancel Amazon Prime Subscription with live chat

Live chat is often faster than calling.

  1. Go to Amazon's 'Customer Service' page.
  2. Click on 'Something else'.
  3. Then click 'I need more help'.
  4. This should launch a chat window where you can connect with a support agent. Just tell them you want to cancel your Prime membership.

Before you cancel, know this. Amazon won't delete your account, just your Prime perks. You can still shop on the site. For refunds, Amazon is usually pretty fair. If you haven't used any Prime benefits since your last charge, you'll likely get a full refund. If you've used some, you might get a partial, pro-rated refund. There's no option to 'pause' your membership, but during the cancellation process, they will offer to send you a reminder three days before your renewal date, which is the next best thing.
