American Express is known for exceptional cardholder protections — and they live up to the reputation. Amex disputes are resolved faster and more favorably than most other card issuers. Here's how to use your Amex benefits to their fullest.

How to Dispute an Amex Charge

Through the App or Website (Fastest)

  1. Log into americanexpress.com or the Amex app
  2. Find the transaction in your recent activity
  3. Click on it and select "Inquire about this charge" or "Dispute this charge"
  4. Select the reason and provide details

Fee Management

Annual Fee Negotiation

Before paying or canceling:

  1. Call the retention line (number on your card)
  2. Say: "I'm considering whether to keep this card. The annual fee is hard to justify."
  3. Common retention offers:
    • Statement credit matching part of the annual fee
    • Bonus points (10,000-60,000 depending on card)
    • Spend-based offers ("spend $3,000 in 3 months, earn 30,000 points")
  4. If the offer isn't good enough, ask to downgrade to a no-annual-fee card instead of canceling

Late Fee Reversal

  • Call and request a courtesy reversal
  • Amex is generous with first-time late fee waivers
  • Ask for interest charges to be reversed as well
