Canceling or downgrading iCloud+ does not immediately delete all items in iCloud, but if your data exceeds the storage available on your new plan, iCloud stops syncing and completing new backups until you free space or upgrade again. Existing content already downloaded to your devices remains on those devices. Apple recommends archiving or copying important items from iCloud Drive, Photos, Mail, and other apps before you reduce storage so that you have additional copies if you later trim or lose cloud data.

Apple’s iCloud+ plan article explains that downgrades and cancellations take effect after your current subscription billing period ends. When you choose a lower plan or the free 5 GB plan, you continue to have your existing storage and iCloud+ features until that end date, and only then does your account switch to the new plan. You should see a blue check next to your new plan and a message indicating automatic renewal or the scheduled change.

After changing your plan, open your iCloud+ plan or Subscriptions screen and check which plan has a checkmark. Apple’s downgrade article notes that you should see a blue check next to the plan you chose and a message about the plan renewing automatically; if you selected the free plan, that indicates paid iCloud+ will not renew. Apple’s storage management guidance states that when you run out of iCloud storage, your device can’t back up to iCloud, new photos and files don’t upload, and you won’t be able to send or receive email using your iCloud email address. If you move to the free plan and remain over 5 GB, iCloud Mail behaves as if you are out of storage until you delete or move messages and other data or upgrade again.

If you also subscribe to Apple One, canceling or downgrading a separate iCloud+ plan does not remove the storage included with Apple One. Apple explains that you can either keep both plans, combining their storage, or choose to rely only on the iCloud storage bundled with Apple One by downgrading or canceling your standalone iCloud+ plan. If you downgrade to the free 5 GB plan and no other family member shares an iCloud+ subscription, iCloud+ features and shared storage end for everyone. However, Apple’s Family Sharing guidance explains that any adult in the group can share a paid iCloud+ subscription with up to five other family members. If another family member starts or continues sharing iCloud+, you can move off your personal plan while still using the family’s shared storage and features.

Apple does not offer a pause option for iCloud+, but you can downgrade to a smaller paid storage tier or to the free plan at any time. Apple’s downgrade article and storage guidance show how to choose a different plan and reduce your iCloud usage. This lets you cut costs by picking a lower tier or returning to the free plan, and you can upgrade again later if you need more storage or want iCloud+ features back.

Apple’s subscription‑cancellation article recommends first searching your email for a receipt from Apple for the iCloud+ charge. If the receipt shows another Apple Account—either one of your own or a family member’s—that account must be used to manage or cancel the plan. If no Apple receipt exists and your financial statement shows another company, Apple advises that the subscription is billed elsewhere and must be canceled directly with that provider, not through Apple’s iCloud settings.
