Should you contact Slack first?

Use this Slack check to choose between an official account action and help preparing a clearer follow-up.

  1. Confirm the billing owner before canceling

    • Workspace Owners and members who originally upgraded a workspace cancel a Slack subscription by downgrading it to the free plan from the desktop Billing page. In Slack on the web, click Admin in the sidebar (or your workspace name), open Manage billing, go to the Overview tab, choose Change plan details, select Downgrade to Free for now or at renewal, then review and confirm. After cancellation, the workspace continues on the free version with 90‑day message/file visibility and free‑plan limits; paid features like guest accounts, Slack Connect channels, workflows, and advanced analytics are reduced or disabled.
    • For workspaces billed directly by Slack, only Workspace Owners and the member who upgraded the workspace can access the Billing page and change or cancel a paid plan. Primary Owners are a type of Workspace Owner; they can also delete the workspace entirely, but regular members and guests cannot manage billing or subscriptions.
    • Slack’s public documentation emphasizes credits and downgrade timing options rather than partial‑period cash refunds. Cancelling primarily affects future renewals while leaving past charges intact.
  2. Keep enough proof for a focused follow-up

    • Save the confirmation, effective date, and billing receipt.
    • Capture the plan, renewal date, and company shown on the receipt.
    • Challenge only a specific unresolved charge or cancellation result.

How Pine helps with Slack

A practical workflow for moving from a messy support problem to a clear request.

  1. Step 01

    Open the workspace billing page

Sign in to Slack on a desktop browser or the desktop app for the workspace you want to cancel. In the left sidebar, click Admin; if you don’t see Admin, click your workspace name instead. From the menu, select Manage billing to open the Billing page on the Overview tab for that workspace.

  2. Step 02

    Choose Change plan

On the Billing Overview tab, locate the section that shows your current paid plan and renewal information. Click the link or button labeled Change plan details (in some regions this may appear as Change subscription details) to open the screen where you can adjust or downgrade your plan.

  3. Step 03

Select the cancellation or free-plan option

In the plan‑change view, review the available plan options and choose Downgrade to Free. Decide whether you want the downgrade to happen immediately or on your next renewal date, then continue to the checkout screen Slack presents.

  4. Step 04

    Review workspace effects and confirm

On the checkout and confirmation pages, read the summary of when billing will stop, how any existing Slack credits will be applied, and which paid features you’ll lose under the free plan’s limits. When you’re ready, click Continue to Checkout if prompted and then Downgrade Slack. Keep any confirmation email and revisit the Billing Overview tab to verify that your workspace now shows the free plan or a scheduled downgrade.

Slack FAQs

Short answers for the questions people usually ask before starting.

Yes. Slack’s docs state that Workspace Owners and members who upgraded a workspace can downgrade from a paid plan to the free plan at any time from the Billing page. You can choose whether the downgrade takes effect immediately or at your next renewal date, but payments already made are not refunded; cancellation mainly stops future renewals.
When you downgrade to the free plan, Slack limits visibility to the most recent 90 days of messages and files. Content older than that is hidden, and Slack’s current policy says data older than one year is deleted on a rolling basis. Workspace Owners on Free can only choose basic retention options and should export important data before longer histories are removed.
Slack generally does not refund subscription payments already made. Instead, if you downgrade to Free immediately and your renewal date is more than a day away, Slack prorates the remaining balance and holds it as non‑refundable account credit for your team. Those credits can offset future paid usage but have no cash value and expire when the paid plan ends.
Only Workspace Owners and the member who originally upgraded the workspace can access the Billing page and change or cancel the plan. The Workspace Primary Owner is also an Owner and can manage billing, but regular members, guests, and most admins without Owner‑level permissions cannot see Manage billing. If you lack access, ask an Owner or upgrader to perform the downgrade.
After you complete the Downgrade to Free flow and click Downgrade Slack, the change is applied either immediately or at your next renewal date, depending on what you selected. To confirm, return to Admin → Manage billing and check the Overview tab to verify that your workspace now shows the free plan and updated renewal information. Any confirmation email Slack sends should match this status.
No. Downgrading to the free plan cancels paid billing but keeps your workspace and member accounts intact under free‑plan limits. Deleting a workspace is a separate, irreversible action available only to the Primary Owner, and Slack recommends exporting data first because messages and files cannot be recovered once deletion is complete.
If you don’t see Admin in the sidebar or Manage billing in the menu, you are likely not a Workspace Owner or the member who upgraded the workspace. First confirm you’re in the correct workspace. If billing options are still missing, ask an Owner to perform the downgrade or submit a request through Slack’s Contact Us form under the Billing & plans topic.
Trials and paid subscriptions are handled slightly differently. Slack explains that trials of paid plans automatically revert to the free plan when they end unless you upgrade, and Owners or Admins can also end a trial early from the Billing page. If you’ve already upgraded to a paid plan and later downgrade, Terms of Service apply: you can cancel anytime but payments already made are not refunded.
