Should you contact Chicago Tribune first?

Use this Chicago Tribune check to choose between an official account action and help preparing a clearer follow-up.

  1. Confirm the billing owner before canceling

    • To cancel Chicago Tribune, subscribers billed directly by Tribune Publishing must cancel through Chicago Tribune customer service (by phone or email, and in some cases via the online customer portal), while subscriptions billed through Apple’s App Store or Google Play must be canceled in the corresponding Apple or Google subscription settings. Direct-billed newspaper subscriptions are continuous and keep renewing until you cancel, and they are generally sold as fully prepaid and non‑refundable for the current term. App Store and Google Play subscriptions also auto‑renew and typically continue to provide access until the end of the already‑paid billing period after you turn off renewal. If you purchased a Chicago Tribune print, digital, or bundle subscription directly from the newspaper (website checkout, phone order, mailed invoice, or Easy Pay), Tribune Publishing Company, LLC is the billing owner and only Tribune’s systems can stop those recurring charges. You must cancel by contacting Chicago Tribune customer service using the phone number or email listed for “Chicago Tribune” in Tribune Publishing’s Subscriber Terms contact table, and—where your jurisdiction and signup channel allow—by using the Cancel Subscription option in your online account settings. Tribune Publishing’s Subscriber Terms explicitly state that subscriptions are continuous and will be billed until you cancel, and that cancellations are not accepted by postal mail. For subscriptions purchased as in‑app purchases in the Chicago Tribune iOS app, Apple is the billing owner; the App Store product description and Apple Support both direct you to manage and cancel these subscriptions via the Apple Account Subscriptions screen on your device or the web, not through the newspaper’s customer service. For subscriptions purchased through the Chicago Tribune Android app using Google Play Billing, Google is the billing owner; Google Play Help requires that you cancel from your Google Play subscriptions page, and uninstalling the app does not stop billing. Chicago Tribune support generally cannot access or modify Apple or Google Play billing systems, and conversely Apple and Google cannot cancel a direct newspaper subscription managed by Tribune.
    • Use the billing owner shown on your Chicago Tribune receipt or account before following a cancellation path. Keep the final status, confirmation email, and effective date for any later billing dispute.
    • Refunds depend on who bills you and the reason for the request. Tribune Publishing treats most Chicago Tribune subscriptions as fully prepaid and non‑refundable, while Apple and Google Play apply their own, separate refund policies for in‑app subscriptions.
  2. Keep enough proof for a focused follow-up

    • Save the confirmation, effective date, and billing receipt.
    • Capture the plan, renewal date, and company shown on the receipt.
    • Challenge only a specific unresolved charge or cancellation result.

Chicago Tribune FAQs

Short answers for the questions people usually ask before starting.

You cancel a direct-billed Chicago Tribune subscription by contacting Tribune Publishing’s Subscriber Services, not Apple or Google. The Subscriber Terms say you have the right to cancel at any time by calling or emailing the contact listed for “Chicago Tribune” in the Contact Us section, and in some jurisdictions by using a Cancel Subscription option in your online account portal when available.
To cancel a Chicago Tribune subscription billed through Apple, use your iPhone’s subscription settings rather than contacting the newspaper. Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose Chicago Tribune, and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple Support notes that if you see an expiration date and no Cancel button, the subscription is already set to end and won’t renew.
To cancel a Chicago Tribune subscription billed via Google Play, manage it from your Google account. Google Play Help instructs you to open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select Chicago Tribune, and tap Cancel subscription. Google emphasizes that uninstalling the app alone does not cancel or stop recurring charges.
After you cancel, billing stops after the current paid term ends, but access usually continues until that point. Tribune’s Subscriber Terms frame subscriptions as prepaid, non‑refundable licenses, and Apple and Google Play both state that canceled subscriptions typically remain usable through the end of the already‑paid billing period before access is cut off.
Refunds are uncommon after canceling a Chicago Tribune subscription. Tribune’s Subscriber Terms say subscriptions are fully prepaid and non‑refundable, with credits or refunds granted only at the company’s discretion in limited situations. For App Store or Google Play subscriptions, Apple and Google apply their own refund rules, and you must request any refund directly through those platforms.
You should cancel before your next renewal date to avoid additional billing. Tribune’s terms say you are charged for service up to the point of cancellation, so waiting until after billing posts can leave you paying another full term. Apple and Google Play recommend canceling subscriptions at least 24 hours before renewal, since they process renewals shortly before the period ends.
To request a vacation hold or temporary change in print delivery, you must work with Chicago Tribune’s Subscriber Services. The Subscriber Terms note that no credit is automatically offered for vacation interruptions and emphasize that delivery adjustments, surcharges, and special editions can affect your paid‑through date, so ask customer service how a hold will impact your billing before confirming it.
Senior pricing for Chicago Tribune is not detailed in Tribune Publishing’s public Subscriber Terms, and prices can change frequently. Because current offers and any age‑based discounts are controlled at checkout, the safest way to see your exact rate is to visit the official Chicago Tribune subscription or offers page and review the pricing presented for your address and eligibility.
Canceling your subscription typically stops billing and delivery but does not automatically delete your online Chicago Tribune account or erase all stored data. Tribune’s Privacy Policy governs how your personal information is retained and used, and it does not state that subscription cancellation alone triggers full data deletion, so you may need to make separate privacy or deletion requests where available.
To dispute a Chicago Tribune bill, contact Subscriber Services promptly and be prepared with your statement details. Tribune’s Subscriber Terms require that billing disputes be raised by phone or electronic communication within 120 days of the statement date. For App Store and Google Play charges, Apple and Google provide separate tools to review purchase history, update payment methods, and request refunds.
